Well, I am attaching the message I received from our new-found Swope researcher. I will forward anything else I receive. I also heard from another person today -- who has Swopes in Seneca County OH, where I am trying to establish a link -- and says her Swopes are not connected to Yost -- Again, I'll ask for her gedcom & get back to you. Mike -- thank you -- you're great! See ya Donna Subj: Yost Schwab Date: 96-10-21 21:53:57 EDT From: JOJACDIXON To: IrishinTX Hi Donna, It was great to get such an enthusiastic response to my letter to you about Yost Schwab. I have much to tell you. First I am going over your note and answering your questions. My list of the children of Jost and Anna Katherina Wolfhardt is exactly the same as yours except for child #11, who died the day of birth. If you are interested in tracing all lines of descent from Yost, the name of a lady who is a descendant of Anna Maria Schwab and her husband Andreas Meixel is Lisa Ellen Barnett, P.O. Box 106, Knoxville, Iowa 50138. I last heard from her in 1994 when she wrote "the name of the lady who compiled the Mikesell book, which goes back to various lines including Schwab is: Mrs. Ardella Rohde, Box 269, Parowan, Utah 84761 (phone 801-477-3461)". The book was or is selling for $30. plus $3. shipping. I didn't b uy it so can't comment on it. I did meet a woman who was a descendant of Anna Elizabeth and Johann Eberhardt Riehm about three years ago- I think we worked it out that we were seventh cousins twice removed! She lived in Columbia, Missouri. The genealogical software I use is PAF from Salt Lake City. We are set up to receive a gedcom. We have a Macintosh computer but can convert any disk we receive to make it compatible. My husband is the computer whiz so I rely on him - too much I fear. Before I send you material on a gedcom or through the mail, I would like to know primarily what you are interested in. I will try to explain what I am interested in. First, here is how I am a descendant from Yost. Yost Schwab md Anna Katharina Wolfhart (1663) Johannes Jost Schwab (1704) md Anna Dorothea Line/Lein (1st wife) Anna Dorothea Schwab (1735) md Rev.Johann Samuel Schwerdtfeger (1734) Samuel Schwerdfeger (ca 1763) md Margaretha Crober Peter Schwerdfeger (1808) md Azubah Grandy (1812) William Harvey Schwerdfeger (1842) md Elizabeth Todd (1845) Norman Sidney Schwerdfager (1878) md Ada Marion Morrison (1876) Doris Mary Schwerdfager (1909) md John Wesley Sterling (1902) Marion Doris Jacqueline Sterling (1934) md John Edward Dixon (1933) In my PAF program I have only put information on my direct ancestors and their siblings. I have not entered into it children of siblings. Because of this I cannot print out a list of all the descendants of a certain person. I could give you Family Grou p Records of every family from Yost down to me. A cousin of mine in Ottawa, Ontario has attempted to list all the descendants of Samuel Schwerdfeger and his wife Margaretha Crober. It is not on a computer but is in book form - approximately 100 pages, w hich I have and could copy. Anna Dorothea Schwab married the Lutheran pastor who looked after the congregations in the Lancaster, PA area. Rev. Samuel Schwerdtfeger, his wife Anna Dorothea, and their family moved to various localities - in PA, in Maryland, and in New York state (Al bany area). Because they were loyal to the British crown, they moved to Canada in the early 1790s. I even read that he had been thrown into prison because of his loyalties. He organized the first Lutheran church on the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence River in the area now known as Riverside, Ontario (near Morrisburg, Ont.) Practically all of their children came with them and remained in Canada. I myself was born in Ottawa and know of few Schwerdfagers who returned to the U.S. A book was written ab out the Rev. by a descendant. It is fact mixed with fiction I believe. There is a portion in it about the Rev. meeting Anna Dorothea and saving her from a wolf! The author is now dead. I wish I could have quizzed her about the source of her story. Th ere is a plaque on the St. Lawrence River about the Rev. and lots written about him. I could send you a one page writeup on him if you are interested. A man named Klaas VanderBaaren, P.O. Box 81, Morrisburg Ontario, K0C 1X0, Canada was encouraging diffe rent descendants to write books on the various descendants of each of Rev. Samuel's sons. Some of them were actually published but I never have seen any of them. It has been four years since I had contact with him. He was a committed researcher. About three years ago we stopped and spent a day at the Lancaster PA Historical Society library. I went through as many books, files, etc. as I could in the time we had. I probably have a few more facts on the families of Johannes Jost Schwab by his two wives than you have because of this. I might (?) have a few more facts on Yost Schwab's family but I am not sure. I found a writeup on the moving of Yost and his wife's bodies from one burial site to another. It is a little gruesome but interesting. Would you like to see it if you have not already not? I have no information on Yost Schwab's parents and ancestors and would dearly love it if you could send me what you have. About three years ago we copied (gedcom) the information on the computer in the Ancestral File at the Family History Center in SLC o n Katherina Wolfhardt's ancestors. I wish that I had some of the sources for the material that was entered for Anna Katherina Wolfhardt's ancestors. If you have these, I would really appreciate it if you could share them with me. Did you know that your husband and I have a 'famous' cousin? - Jane Fonda. She is my fourth cousin once removed (on her mother's side). She is a descendant of the Rev. Schwerdtfeger and his wife Anna Dorothea Schwab. I have never contacted Jane about o ur 'close' relationship. I have a feeling she wouldn't be the least bit interested! Maybe this bit of news will make you want to cheer for the Atlanta Braves instead of the New York Yankees. I'm sorry that none of our line goes back to Ohio. I would love to have your gedcom file listing the descendants you have for Yost Schwab. I am particularly interested in the FGRs for Yost and his children. I have always been a bit puzzled about the eldest son Hans Jorg. Did he settle in the York PA ar ea? I definitely would like to see the descendants on this line. When I was at the Lancaster Co. Historical Society I saw mentioned the following book - "The Shope (Swope?)-Schwab Family Tree and Genealogy", published by Gilbert Ernst Swope in 1896 (400 pages). I don't believe it was in the library. I wrote to them a sking where I could find it. I never got a reply. It sounded intriguing. Have you seen it? It might provide your missing link. I would appreciate it if you would tell me how to hook up with Mike Fromholtz's web page. Sorry that this was so long but I had so much to say. Ginny ginny@ptialaska.net **************************************************** I spoke with my mother and she has some information... Michael Swope was the brother of Joseph Swope (my line) of Wolf Creek. Barbra Kellar of Hinton W.Va, has been in contact with a California family who are decendants of Michael. Michael has a DAR line. The Historical marker that I mentioned in my last message mentions Michael, Historical marker reads: JOSEPH SWOPE Born 1707 in Germany, Swope came to America ca. 1720. Reputedly first to settle Monroe County, ca 1752, when part of Agusta Co. Son Michael, born 29 Sept. 1753, recorded as 1st white child born in Monroe. I too am a descendant of Yost SCHWAB, and have been in contact with many others--most of which you list on your website. I will contact another one or two and encourage them to check out your site. I've recently been in contact with Ginny Humes. I'm interested in something you said in your letter to her, as follows: > Michael Swope was the brother of Joseph Swope (my line) of Wolf Creek. > Barbra Kellar of Hinton W.Va, has been in contact with a California > family who are decendants of Michael. Michael has a DAR line. You don't list Barbra Kellar's email, and I think I'd like to contact her regarding this CA line. Mine also went on to CA, and I'm wondering how immediately we may be related. Can you pass her email on to me? My relationship is through Michael SWOPE & Mary Eleanor ELLISON's daughter, Elizabeth, who married George MILLER. Jill Joseph and I both descend from George and Elizabeth's daughter, K(C)atherine, who married James JOHNSTON. I am also descended from George and Elizabeth's daughter, Sarah, who married Andrew DUNN. I'm amazed at the number of people online who are related through the SWOPE's. My only regret is that there doesn't seem to be anyone working on some of my other lines! Whine, whine, whine! Anyway, thanks for the website and for helping us all get together. I have been accepted to own a mail group that is specifically for Swope, Schwab, Swoope surname. I am putting together the welcome message and instructions for subscribing, and I wonder if you would like your web page listed in the welcome message? I am very excited; well, nervous too, since I really don't know what I am getting into. It looks as though my job will be to handle mail problems and yell at people who flame (which of course a REAL Swope would never do - hahahaha), and unsubscribe people who need it, whether they know it or not. I'll send out some emails when it's ready, hopefully this week. I have to get the materials back to the listserv guy and then wait for him to subscribe me as the first person on the list. He said he would do this within 4 days. I subscribe to several of these surname lists, and some are very active, and some aren't, so we'll see about this one! My husband's "Coon/Koontz" list comes to 15 or 20 messages a day sometimes, but my "Stewart" list is more like 1 message a month. Go figure. Let me know about the plug for your web page. I don't want to start out by making anyone mad! >... Susan, if you can get the machine parts together, Ill be glad to >help you >assemble the machine, and even help to turn the crank! I may very well take you up on this. I haven't discovered yet what happens if I go on vacation. I saw an entire list crash a while back when the list owner left and someone on the list also left, but left and automatic reply feature on her email. As the messages multiplied geometrically, he was just gone! I came in the first morning to find 1300 messages! >> people. I find direct-line despondency lists (e. g. Yost to me) to be Boy, it sure helps to recheck what the spell checker is actually inserting (mine, not yours!)! My "despondency list" will be inserted here, in case I haven't sent it before. I've been so ditsy the last few weeks! >I understand the part about families that push the wrong buttons, >I have somehow lost the use of my CD-ROM drive, We never know what to expect when we boot! Our 17-year old is absolutely fearless on the computer, matched only by our absolute fearFULness. We thought about fighting battles over it, and then decided just to back up as much as we can and let him have at it. It's amazing what he can do, and it's only a computer. >As for your idea about the "My line to Yost", thats a great idea! >Also, I would be glad to add any personal profiles about the researchers >on my address listings so that we can know more about each other and >the capabilities of our computers. OK. Here's mine. I am a scientific illustrator (fancy name for making graphs, mostly) working for the USDA at an ag research lab, where the focus is on finding more efficient ways of farming the hill-lands of Appalachia. My husband Doug is a scientist at the same facility, doing research on water quality. We have two teenagers, 17 and 15, who are very active sorts of people: soccer, band, computers, ham radio, skiing. Those Swope researchers who have been unfortunate enough to try to carry on conversations with me in October have already discovered that I'm a crazy person then, because of band marching season (it is an exceptional band) and soccer. We live in Raleigh County, about an hour drive from the Swope homestead in Wolf Creek. In my "free" time I work on my genealogy (Stewart, Swope, Bolinger, Diddle, Pugh, Nottingham, Kerr, Yeager), do some bobbin lace and tatting, spin, draw (rarely). Doug and the kids are fairly serious cavers in Monroe and Greenbrier Co. >Another idea: >Have those folks with computers, adopt a cousin(s) that doesnt have a >computer, and send that cousin a hard copy of related e-mail, and then >post partial responses... that way, there is no money that has to be >funneled to a central party for newsletter disbursments. I think it would be fabulous to have whole Swope networks! I'm about to call Barbara Keller, who I don't think is on-line. I understand she knows "everything" about the Swopes. I haven't met her yet. If it would ever stop snowing here, I could make the trip to Hinton. Whew, what a day. I didn't expect the guy I emailed for info to make it so easy to set up a mail list! When it's ready I'll send out subscription infor to everyone I can think of. I may even ask you if you could put a link on your page???? I guess there comes a point (probably at my age) where I'm not the youngster any more - have to learn to not freak. I hope others will send some bios to your page - maybe you could post a message on the newly established Swope List? We still are only 6 subbed. I'll soon haul out the cattle prods and suggest some intros, but I was hoping to have a few more signed up before I do. Maybe lists aren't everyone's "thing" (imagine!). BTW, did a confirmation of mail being picked up go to you also? My cousin Sharon subbed and she has an automatic confirmation on her email software, but I don't know if it went to the whole list or only to me, as the poster of a message. Details. I hope she will participate. She's a sweety, and we play "tell your mom what my dad told me and see what she says", and have greatly increased our family lore that way. Susan ****************************************************** Subject: Herbert Swope Date: Tue, 26 Nov 1996 05:49:55 -0500 From: Susan Boyer To: "Swope Family discussion list" Hello Swope friends and cousins: I got a note from the rmgate guy this morning, and he said there were server problems over the weekend. I sent this on Saturday, but haven't seen it on the list yet, so I'm assuming it was a casualty. My apologies if this is a second copy you've seen. I read a biography of James Thurber a few months ago and there were some stories in it about the famed newspaperman and party animal, Herbert Bayard Swope (1882 -1958). I was curious as to whether this man was our claim to fame, and so checked out a biography of on interlibrary loan, which arrived today. It didn't take long to discover he is not of the Yost S. family, but I thought you might be interested in this anyway. "There is no doubt that Herbert Bayard Swope was one of the most accomplished men of his time in tangible as well as intangible ways. As newspaperman, a foreign correspondent and an editor, he knew virtually everyone, from gangsters to socialites, from ward politicians to American Presidents.... He was at various times, and often simultaneously, a force in the Democratic party, advisor to politicians, financiers and industrialists, New York State Racing Commissioner, consultant to a Secretary of War, a founder and direct or of Freedom House, and confidant of such important people as... Franklin Delano Roosevelt." (jacket) "Isaac Swope, their father, came to America, at the age of twenty six, in 1857. He was a native of Lengsfeld, a village near Eisenach, in Thuringia, and his name was Isaac Schwab. His son Herbert, for all his preciseness about historical facts, tended to be vague about his origins. "My grandfather's name was Schwob, or Schwoppe," he once wrote a friend. "Probably the name grew from Schwabia, or Swobenland. His name became Swope, having been anglicized..." Actually, the grandfather, Hirsh Schwab, who died in 1878, never changed his name at all. There was nothing unusual, however, about such anglicizing. As far back as 1720 an unrelated German Schwab migrated to this country and then became a Swope. Another unrelated namesake, Charles M. Schwab, did all right without altering his patronym." (p. 84) "The Schwabs...were faithful to Orthodox Jewish customs." (p. 85) There was also this, a toast from Ralph Pulitzer: "Now here's to Herbert Bayard Swope. God save the King. God save the Pope. And God protect the President from this demure, retiring gent...." (p. 6) Reference: Kahn, E.J., Jr. The World of Swope, A Biography of Herbert Bayard Swope, 1965, Simon and Schuster, New York, 510pp Interesting man. What a shame he's not 'ours'. I wonder what a large family the Schwabs were in Germany. Obviously they had varied religious backgrounds. I've also wondered if Charles Schwab (of the investment firm) is one of *us*. My name is Donna Swope. I live in Austin Texas, was born in Ohio, grew up in Western PA, joined the Navy where I met Robert Swope. We married in 1966, raised a family while he continued to serve in the Navy. He died in 1988. I work at Austin Community College. My email address is dswope@ix.netcom.com, and my web page is at http://www.netcom.com/~dswope/home.html Obviously I am researching my husband's line -- Samuel Swope (Fostoria, OH) Frederick Swope (b 1873, Fostoria, OH) Clifford Swope (b. 1896, probably in MO) Duard Swope (b. 1918 in MO) Robert Swope (b. 1945 in MO) My (tenuous) tie to Yost is through a gentleman from Missouri named Milton Swope, who filled out an extensive family history form which I found in the archives of the Johnson County Historical Society in Warrensburg, MO. He traces HIS ancestors back to Yost -- and I have confirmed his information by comparing it with others. I came across a statement in which he said that his neighbor -- Frederick Aster Swope -- was his cousin. That's it. I have yet to find a link between Frederick's father to Yost's family, but I will keep trying! Actually another researcher who was part of Samuel's line indicates that Samuel's father was named David and his father was Jacob, but I have not heard from him in over two years, and he was quite elderly at the time we exchanged letters, so I fear he has died, and I have no idea what happened to his research, which he told me "filled up several file cabinets". What a heartbreaking loss! At any rate I am having fun! My name is Christiana Lynn Calvert Brogan, and I was born in TX, raised in OH, and now live in San Antonio, Texas (not too far from Donna!) I am a wedding coordinator and WWW designer in my free time, and working on becoming a Christian radio broadcaster in the near future (I hope!) I am married to a Systems Administrator for "a" long distance company's customer service department. The only Swope in my line is my ggggrandmother, Rebecca Swope. She married my ggggrandfather, William Doddridge Wood on May 2, 1872 in Fairfield, OH, where Rebecca was supposedly from. She and William had two boys, Arley Ray Wood and Albert Thomas Wood. Rebecca died sometime before her husband who died in 1925 and was married to a third woman at that time. It is unknown who Rebecca's parents were, when she was born , or anything else about her... My guess is she was probably younger than William (b. 1824) because he would have been 48 when he married her (a little old for a woman to enter parenthood in those days) But we don't have any other information on her. Hoping you can help us out... I retired from the US Navy after 24 years in 1995 and work now as a manpower economist. I served aboard cruisers and destroyers as a surface warfare officer during my years as a commissioned officer and as an Aviation Ordnanceman during my enlisted years. Genealogy is my main hobby since I've "come ashore". My bride of 25 years and I have two adult children whom graduated from college in May 1996. They both have good jobs and don't live at home! Life is good. My family Swope line from the earliest ancestor to me: George Schwab, b. 1610, Sinsheim, Germandy; d. 1689 Jost Schwab, b. 1656, Sinsheim; d. 1727, Lancaster, PA Anna Elizebetha Schwab, b. 1692, Duhren, Germany; d. 1761, Muddy Creek; m.Eberhardt Ream Mathias Ream, b. 1726, Lancaster, PA; d. 1789, Cocalico John Frederick Ream Henry Ream Catherine Ream, m. John P. Hurlbut George Hurlbut Daniel (Owen D. Hurlbut) Reams Orin Reams Sr. Orin Reams, Jr. If you're confused on how it got from Ream to Hurlbut to Reams.....and want to know. My grandfather, Owen Hurlbut changed his name to Daniel Reams. Not until I found his grandmother, Catherine's maiden name did I know why. Daniel's mother died when he was six and his grandmother, Catharine lived in the home after his father (with six children) remarried after a short time. Daniel was 30 in 1917 and probably changed his name to claim a younger age when he enlisted in the US Army during WW I. He fought in France and brought home a wife (and my grandmother) from Germany! Karasik" To: "Swope Family list" Hello everyone. After getting Susan's permission, I have joined the Swope mail list in the hope that I might make a connection with my birthfamily. Once every few weeks I will probably re-post the same or a similar letter asking the newest members of the Swope mail list to take a look at my web site to see if any of the information there sounds familiar. For those of you who haven't gotten one of my pesky emails already...PLEASE, when you have a moment, visit my URL. If even the slightest bit of information sounds even vaguely familiar, please email me at Seraphim49@aol.com or at akarasik@moac.morgan.edu. Thanks for your help in advance and special thanks to Susan for allowing me to join the list. Adrienne wrote to me prior to joining our list and asked for my permission to subscribe. Of course, my permission was never necessary, as the list is open to anyone, but I think it shows a great deal of sensitivity and concern on Adrienne's part that she is acting with so much care. I, for one, welcome her posts, which she will have to do every so often, and I hope that her search is successful. I have welcomed Adrienne to my Swope family, and I know you all will welcome her also. Wouldn't it be wonderful if she found her birth family through our list, and had her happy ending? Until then, I hope you will all welcome Adrienne into all our varied Swope branches. Versailles (near Pittsburgh), PA Hello Joe, Glad that you dropped by.... You've raised a good question about the Yost Swope headstone, Ill post a map soon that shows the location of the grave. The way that I found this stone is a story in itself. In ~1989, my mother and father drove the PA via Wolf Creek WVA... Using directions that they had received years earlier from the Gilbert E. Swope Book circa 1900, they drove to Lancaster and then to Leola and found Hellar Church Road, the church and the cemetery, and the tall Yost Marker... They took lots of photos of the stones and the church. My father passed away in 1992. Anyway, last summer (1996), my wife had a family reunion in PA near Reading, and I took my family via the Wolf creek route also. I used my mothers instructions on how to get to the church, except that we went to Bird-in-hand first to eat breakfast... knowing that Leola and the church that Dad found was somewhat north of Bird in hand. That morning I drove up and down the main highway and found a road near a railroad that was leading northward. I drove north on that road, and had to turn several times onto other roads, as I felt like the main road was leading me away from the direction that I wanted to go.... So we are driving along, and low-and-behold, there is the red brick church on Hellar Church Road with the cemetary behind it! >From the road, we could see the large marker with the german-gothic style top... ....same as in my Mom and Dad's pictures... We got out of the van, and walked into the cemetary and found the rows of Swopes / Schwabs (~24 from memory) .... There were more Swopes in one spot that I had ever seen, living OR dead! Reading the stones I found 'Yost's' stone as you see in the photo... I'm really excited by now, the sun was high in the sky and the shadows on the inscriptions were great! I was taking photos when my wife, Trish, walked up and said something was wrong!?!?... ...the rows of headstones were running perpendicular to the church, but in my Dad's photos, the church was almost directly in line, along and behind the rows of headstones! This was getting really strange! Closer examination of my parent's photos revealed that the arches above the church windows were slightly different than the church that we were standing near.... somehow we were at a different church! We drove north on Hellar road and found the church that my mother and father had photographed! I'd Like to say that some Divine Providence led me to the right cemetery! [ Thanks Dad! ] ;) Yost was originally buried in an orchard on his farm, his wife was buried beside him. There is documentation ( quoted from the newspaper) that the grave(s) were moved. The ~1900 photo showed the wife's stone, with Yost's grave marked with a cross. The cemetary that I found had the wife's original stone, and Yost's stone as seen in my photo, was fairly recent. My mother and I speculate that the marker that she and Dad found was a german description/memorial of the Yost grave (with cross) at the orchard, and that there may be some dispute among the descendents/churches of who claims the most 'original' stone. Maybe we can get someone in the Lancaster area that can read german to decipher the inscription on the Leola Swope stone! When My mother sent her photos to T.A.Swope of South Carolina, T.A. questioned my mother's photos.... For a tie breaker we need to contact your close cousin, ( by this line's standards) T.A.
