Whistling

As a child living in my parents home in a rural suburb of upstate New York, I can recall my father who was a rugged and devoted husband and father. While mom cooked, cleaned, and took care of the inside of the house, dad spent all of his free time tending to the outside chores as cultivating our large garden, mowing the lawn, and general tinkering with some sort of mechanical repair of one sort of another in the basement. I noticed, even back then, that dad always seemed to be whistling. It was a comforting and pleasant sound and one that drew me to occasionally join him or, at the minimum, tap my toe or quietly hum to myself as I went about my own chores.
Did you know it takes effort to whistle? It's not that putting your lips together and blowing is so hard, but it seems to me that the important ingredient to whistling is JOY.
Think about the times you have whistled in your life. You were happy and in a good mood, right?
The joy within you was as a fountain begging for release. You wanted it to flow, so out from your lips came the joy within you, the sweet sound of music, whistling.
In the Bible, we are told that through our faith in God we may obtain joy. "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." (Psalm 16:11).
The joy of His servants may be full! "My servants will sing out of the joy of their hearts, but you will cry out from anguish of heart and wail in brokenness of spirit." (Isaiah 65:14)
You see, what is in our hearts comes through our mouths and actions. When one is filled with bitterness and hatred, his mouth will spew hate and his deeds will not be loving, but when one has real joy in his heart, the spirit rejoices and wants to share the happiness that is within.
Real joy can only come from God. Certainly, the carnal world can offer cheap imitations from money, wine, and fame, but TRUE joy only comes from knowledge of God and the salvation only He can offer through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Jesus is standing at the door to your heart all the time. He is knocking to come in and love you and guide you. He is offering you the gift of everlasting life, but you must hear Him and open the door to Him as He will not kick it in. (Rev. 3:20) A gift is just outside your heart's door at this time. Will you receive this gift? Will you open the door to Jesus and let him flood your soul with His love? If so, read the following paragraph as your prayer.

Father, I know that I have sinned and I turn from those ways and ask you to come into my heart and cleanse me. I know that I cannot do this on my own and I need your help. Fill my soul, Lord, and make me whole. I want your will for my life to be preeminent. Help me to grow in your way. I pray this in the precious name of Jesus.
    Amen
