Hidden in the Tub

(Ephesians 5:15, ``See then that ye walk
circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,'')

When the days of violence and turmoil
Burst on us with uncontrollable hate;
When mothers hide their children from drive-bys
And bolt the doors and raise the Iron gate,

Guns are purchased in increasing numbers
By those who should never have them around.
The little ones think they're playing with toys
Until they bury their friend underground.

The answer is found in family values
Taught—no, drilled in—from the age of one,
Based on teachings that have raised these parents
The values their parents, who raised them, spun.

What are these values that we hold so dear?
Not claiming a right beyond what is clear,
Respecting each other's right to breathe free,
Not trying to prove you're better than me.

Paul said that we should all walk as wise men''
That to do otherwise would be like fools.
Do unto others as you want from them,
That is not breaking, but keeping the rules.
