Bridges Do Not All Come Down

Living close to the Welland Canal (a conduit for ships plying the St. Lawrence Seaway), the structure of bridges have intrigued me ever since I was a lad. For hours I would watch bridges rise and fall. I can still hear the sound of the siren as the bridge rises when a ship approaches.
In Alanburg, on the Welland Canal, a ship actually smashed into a bridge taking the terrified bridge master and his cabin crashing to the waters below. Rumor had it that he was asleep at the switch that fateful night. Alanburg is forever divided with the canal splitting the town.
There are many types of bridges that span various sizes of rivers or canals. C. G. Hull designed a bridge that would not rise when a ship approached but would come down and sink into the Shatt al Arab River in Iraq; he was concerned with the high winds of that region.
The Bailey Bridge has an interesting purpose. Many bridges were destroyed in World War II and the result was a development of a new type of bridge to replace them, most notably, the Bailey bridge. This comes in sections small enough to be carried in ordinary trucks, and can be assembled within hours by six men using only hand tools. The sections can be put together on one bank of a river and rolled across to the other bank, without machinery. Bailey bridges are still used today where there is disaster, war or erosion from flooding.
Interestingly, bridges have a spiritual implication. Just as bridges are governed by physical laws, we are governed by spiritual laws. Our relationship with God can be summarized in four different laws using the bridge analogy.
Law 1 says that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life (John 3:16).
However, Law 2 says that we have become separated from God because we have sinned and come short of God's glory and the wages of sin is death (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23) . This separation, like Alanburg experiences, implies we are on a bank of a river and God is on the other side.
Law #3 But God has provided a 'bridge' in the name of Jesus Christ so that we can bridge the gulf that separates us from Him. This bridge was made when Jesus died on the cross in our place to pay for the penalty of our sins.
Law 4 says that we must receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord individually; then we can know and experience God's love and plan for our lives (John 1:12).
Revelations 3:20 personally invites us to receive Christ as our Bridge. "Yes, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him." Before your cabin comes crashing down on you on some fateful night, I suggest that you follow these four laws and allow Him to come into your life. He is better than any Bailey Bridge!

A Prayer:

"Lord, Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of my life now and make me the kind of person You want me to be. Amen!"

Jesus is standing at the door to your heart all the time. He is knocking to come in and love you and guide you. He is offering you the gift of everlasting life, but you must hear Him and open the door to Him as He will not kick it in. (Rev. 3:20) A gift is just outside your heart's door at this time. Will you receive this gift? Will you open the door to Jesus and let him flood your soul with His love? If so, read the following paragraph as your prayer.

Father, I know that I have sinned and I turn from those ways and ask you to come into my heart and cleanse me. I know that I cannot do this on my own and I need your help. Fill my soul, Lord, and make me whole. I want your will for my life to be preeminent. Help me to grow in your way. I pray this in the precious name of Jesus.
    Amen
